Some procedures involve bruising, swelling, or other side effects that could obscure the results for several weeks or months. With other surgeries, it takes some time for the tissue to adjust and take on its final contours. How long until the full results can be seen? Will the benefits of surgery be permanent, or will the procedure need to be repeated at some point in the future to maintain the results? What is a realistic expectation for the outcome of surgery?
Your surgeon should be willing to answer all of your questions clearly and thoroughly. He or she should avoid pressuring you to consider additional or unnecessary procedures, make sure that you understand all of the potential risks, and leave the final decision up to you. A good surgeon will welcome questions about the procedure and his or her professional qualifications and experience.
